...The microwave!

According to Dr. Pat Kendall from Colorado State University, the microwave is the appliance that causes the most emergency room visits. Here's what you need to know to stay safe.

  • When you're boiling something, don't expect to see bubbles. In the microwave, the bubbles don't always break the surface. But that leads to a lot of burns.

Because when you quickly pull out a boiling hot liquid, the motion shakes the surface, causing the bubbles to erupt and burn you. So don't heat a liquid for more than 2 minutes and then wait another 30 seconds before you remove it from the oven.
  • Another safety tip: Stick a fork in it. Any container that you're heating with plastic wrap over it, needs to be punctured. Because the steam can build up inside to 200 degrees! So poke holes so the steam can escape.

  • Burnt microwave popcorn is the biggest cause of microwave fires. So start cooking with the minimum time suggested. Then stop as soon as the popping slows down. And if you ever see flames inside, keep the door shut and pull the plug.
