Dishwasher Maintenance - Long Live your Dishwasher - Part II- CLICK HERE!

Maintaining your Dishwasher Dishracks
The plastic coating on your dish rack may wear off resulting in corrosion and rust. You can cap the damaged rack tines with slip-on rubber tips and touch up any metal showing with a liquid rubber type material. For best results, remove any rust present on the racks with sandpaper or a sanding block before applying the repair material.

Dishwasher Dishrack repair kits are available in white and light blue.

Cleaning the Spray Arm Holes of your Dishwasher
Over time, the small holes in the spray arm(s) of your dishwasher may become clogged with toothpicks, glass, paper, hard water scale, etc. Your dishwasher will perform better if you clean out the small holes from time to time.

It is a good idea to clean out any hard water and/or soap deposits in the wash system, tank, and pump system. To do this, run hot water at the tap. Put the empty dishwasher into the regular wash cycle. Wait until the machine has filled with water and begins to circulate the water. At this time, add your cleaning product (white vinegar or Glisten) directly into the bottom of the dishwasher.

Allow the machine to run the entire wash cycle. For best results, reset or advance the dishwasher to run again in the wash cycle without draining the treated water. We recommend performing this maintenance once or twice a year.

Dishwasher Filter
On many dishwashers, there is a filter near the bottom or under the lower spray arm that needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. Consult your owner's manual to find out how to remove and clean it. If the filter has holes in it, replace it to protect the pump and motor seals from particles that may be in the dishwasher.

Help! My Dishwasher is Taking Forever!- CLICK HERE!

Everything seems to be going well - when all of a sudden, it seems that your dishwasher is taking forever to wash the disshes. If your dishwasher's cycle times are too long - there are three things to look at:

Water pre-heating
Your dishwasher may be the type of dishwasher that pre-heats the water. If so, and if the water entering the dishwasher is cool or icy-cold, the heater may take up to half an hour to heat the water.

To avoid the wait time on these types of dishwashers, increase the incoming water temperature before turning on the dishwasher. Do that by running the kitchen sink faucet until the water runs hot. Or increase the temperature of the hot water at the hot water heater. (this will increase the temperature throughout the house)

Warning! To lessen the risk of scalding, don't set the hot water heater temperature higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Check the Dishwasher Timer
Dishwasher timers don't often fail. But if every other part of the dishwasher seems to be working properly and the timer knob seems to be stuck in one place--doing one function continuously--the dishwasher timer may be at fault. Dishwasher timers can't be repaired. If yours is defective, replace it.

Water-heating cycle
Many dishwashers heat the wash and/or rinse water to a higher temperature, as the cycle calls for it. In these cycles, the dishwasher pauses after it has filled with water, waiting for the water to reach the pre-set temperature. What happens next, depends, as follows:

On some units, the pause is timed and the unit continues after the allotted time.

On others, the cycle can't continue until the water reaches the higher temperature.

If you have this type of dishwasher and the water isn't being heated (say, because of a problem with the heating element or thermostat), after the unit stops at the heating cycle, it never
continues. When you repair the heating-system problem, the "cycle problem" is fixed too.

Dude, I fixed the Dishwasher- CLICK HERE!

If your Kenmore dishwasher or Sears Dishwasher is inoperable or blinking the "Clean Light" - fixing it is just a few button pushes away!

I just fixed my 655.16042400 unit. Several days ago this dishwasher failed and my husband decided that it was time to buy a new one. I didn't think that we could afford it in this economy. We had the dreaded blinking clean light!!

After an undue amount of research, I found the combination of key pushes that reset the dishwasher and it has been working fine since then!

There are a number of different sequences depending on your model - try:
  1. 'normal wash' followed by 'heated dry' cycle five times -OR-
  2. heated dry, followed by heated wash five times -OR-
  3. "Hi Temp Scrub - Air Dry - Hi Temp Scrub - Air Dry" -OR-
  4. Water Heat / No Heat Dry / What Heat / No Heat Dry.
  5. THEN .... wait for all lights to go on and then go out. This worked like a charm for our dishwasher!

After the lights go off.. your dishwasher will run a partial cycle and then be back to normal.

No service call, no dishwasher parts to buy ... just a few buttons to push!

Spring Cleaning your Home Appliances- CLICK HERE!

The sun is shining beautifully in the Ohio Valley this afternoon and I can't help but think about spring cleaning. Driving through the suburbs, I see the streaks of dirt on windows caused by the final melting of snow and it makes me think about what a mess my windows must be in!

Speaking of spring cleaning - many people do not realize that this is a great time to do some appliance checking and cleaning. Cleaning your dishwasher can keep parts moving properly without obstacles like that little piece of steak bone that was stuck all winter in the silverware container. Make sure you check that each of the following are cleaned and working properly:
Cleaning out the clothes washer and scrubbing down the lint collector in your dryer - even having the vents cleaned. Not only are these little things important to make sure your clothes are cleaned and dryed properly - but they save energy. Saving energy saves money and who's not looking to save a few bucks these days.

Clean out the stove and microwave now too! Make sure you scrub down the grills on the microwave and make sure that the crud on the bottom of your stove is cleared out also.

Finally, use a degreaser and remove all the grease that accumulated on the inside of the stove vent.

... and everytime you tell yourself that you'd rather be outside enjoying the beautiful sunshine, just remember the money you will be saving on energy and in the long run by properly maintaining your home appliances!

Dishwasher Maintenance - Long Live your Dishwasher- CLICK HERE!

Yearly Maintenance for Home Dishwashers

If your dishes are not getting as clean as they used to years ago, there is probably a shortage of water getting into the machine. This is usually caused by a broken or worn out water inlet valve. These valves are located behind the lower kick panel and need replacing every 3-7 years, depending on water conditions. Many do-it-yourselfers can make this repair. It just requires a few common hand tools:

To find the right water inlet valve for your dishwasher, make sure that you have your model number.

  • Inspect and clean your dishwasher.
You don't need to clean the interior of your dishwasher if you use it regularly. If it goes un-used for a week or more and begins to mold or smell bad, you can clean it using Glisten Dishwasher Cleaner and Deodorizer.
  • Repair broken and rusted dishwasher racks.
If the plastic coating wears off the dish rack tines in your dishwasher, they will corrode and rust. The rust particles will then get into the pump and cause much more serious problems. Repair kits are available by clicking here. Prior to making the repair, be sure to clean up the rusted spots on the dishwasher rack with household sandpaper to make the repair last much longer.
  • Clean your dishwasher filter.
On many basic and/or European dishwashers, there's a filter near the bottom, or under the lower spray arm, that needs cleaning regularly. If you have this sort of filter, consult your owner's manual for how to remove and clean it. If the filter is damaged, replace it to protect the dishwasher's pump and motor seals.
  • Clean your dishwasher spray arms.
Over time, small holes in the spray arm(s) of your dishwasher may become clogged with bits of paper, toothpicks, glass, etc. Take a moment to clean out these holes to ensure you're getting the best cleaning ability from your dishwasher.
If you find glass in the spray arm, there are probably glass pieces in the pump housing as well. You may want to disassemble the pump to check and clean it. Also, the glass may have damaged the motor spin seal. If this has happened, you will often see a water leak at the main pump motor. Replace the motor spin seal if necessary.

Help, My Dishwasher is Not Draining!- CLICK HERE!

A non-draining dishwasher is a very common problem. We know that it doesn't seem simple when you are sitting with a ton of water and dirty dishers - but maybe these quick tips can make a difference.
  1. First check is underneath the sump entrance screen. This is located on the bottom of the dishwasher (on the inside). There are usually a couple of screws that you have to remove to peek in. Check in there for any crud or gook. There may be small pieces of glass so wear work gloves. Get all of the crap out of there.

  2. Many dishwashers have a self clean filter inside the basin, at the back of the dishwasher. The draining water must pass through a plunger in the self clean filter body. This can get clogged up and you may need a new one if it is twisted or distorted. The draining water must get past this. The filter can be easily removed from the inside to check to see if it is okay and the plunger will twist out of the self cleaning body so that you can check for distortion.

  3. The back flush valve is sometimes the culprit of draining problems. This can be viewed on the back of your dishwasher. All hoses between the the drain hose to the house plumbing should be checked for any type of restrictions.

  4. Newer dishwashers have a separate drain pump and motor. Older model dishwashers used a drain solenoid valve. If this solenoid fails, the dishwasher won’t drain and you will have to replace it. If the solenoid cannot pull in the plunger, the drain port will not open to allow the motor and pump assembly to drain the water out.
  5. Use a ohm meter to test the continuity of the solenoid coil. You should also test to see if it’s receiving voltage when the dishwasher is supposed to be draining.

Dishwasher Cleaning Tips / Dishwasher Replacement Part- CLICK HERE!

Let's face it - your dishwasher can get pretty grimy and it's not the most fun task you can think of doing on a Saturday afternoon - but giving the dishwasher a thorough cleaning just like other item in your home is a necessity if you are going to get the longevity that you want out of your dishwasher.

And in today's economy - longevity (and of course energy savings) is vital.

Cleaning the spray arm can get your dishes cleaner and save you money on your energy bills.

Over time, the small holes in the spray arm (or multiple spray arms depending on the brand and model number of your dishwasher) of your dishwasher may become clogged with bits of hard food, toothpick pieces, nut pieces, glass, etc. Your dishwasher will do an enormously better job of cleaning your dishes if you take a moment to clean out the small holes in the spray arm, from time to time.

If you need a new spray arm for your dishwasher - click here.

If there are any parts of your dishwasher that are developing rust - you can use a rust remover. Rust Removers can remove rust stains from the inside of your dishwasher.

If your suspect that your dishwasher is leaking at all - you will want to take a look at this floor mat:

The Dishwasher Leak Catcher is an innovative floor mat that slides underneath your dishwasher to divert any water leak to the front of the dishwasher. This will allow you to see the leak and make necessary repairs. No more rotted out floors or leaking ceiling below. No special tools necessary.

Load the Dishwasher Correctly and use Glisten- CLICK HERE!

I read a news article today about a new SteamClean Dishwasher by Maytag. The part that caught my eye was that the dishwasher runs approx. 24 minutes longer than a normal dishwasher. I have to wonder how much more energy this takes and is it worth it?

This triggered a little bit of research about how to properly load a dishwasher to maximize it's ability to clean your dishes.

Careful placement of dishes in the dishwasher, plus an enzyme detergent and rinse aid, can make the difference between glistening dishes and grungy ones that generate caked on residue!

We suggest that you skip prerinsing, because it wastes time, energy, and as much as 6,500 gallons of water per year.

Here are some loading tips that even your kids can follow to get cleaner dishes:
  • Keep large dishes and items at the sides and back, so that they don't block water and detergent from reaching other smaller dishes, cups and glasses.

  • Load the dirtier side of dishes toward the center for more exposure to the spray. This is an important one and is contrary to your natural instinct

  • Use the top rack for plastic and delicate items that are dishwasher safe.

  • Put silverware handles down, but knife handles up. Be careful when removing the cleaned utensils .. you don't want to get stabbed by a fork!

  • Place items with baked-on food facedown and toward the sprayer in thebottom rack.

  • Environmentally Safe, Glisten gets your dishwasher sparkling clean and lemon fresh. Glisten works hard to remove built-up soap scum, food stains and discoloration due to iron and other water impurities. A clean dishwasher can help get your dishes cleaner.

  • Glisten is a non-toxic, citric acid mixture designed to remove iron and manganese, known as hard water stains. It is also safe for septic systems. Glisten will remove food stains on dishes as well.

  • Glisten can be used in small amounts with dishwasher soap to keep glasses and dishes clean.

  • Regular monthly use of Glisten Dishwasher Cleaner is recommended for best results.

  • Glisten can also be used as a laundry aid to brighten whites.

  • Each package contains one 3 ounce pouch. Dishwasher Parts

  • Glisten's Dishwasher Cleaner is not just for cleaning dishwashers, however. It's a multi-purpose cleaning product. It removes stains from dishes, sinks, plastic, and glassware.

  • Use it in the laundry room to remove unsightly iron stains from the tub of the washing machine.
Or try it in the bathroom to tackle those tub, sink, or toilet stains!

Dishwasher Parts - Step 1: Find out the manufacturer- CLICK HERE!

Dishwashing Machine Parts

Figuring out what company made your dishwasher can be a bit confusing. Several big name companies bought dishwashers from different manufacturers at varying times. One company, D&M, made machines for a LOT of different companies; you might find a D&M machine with any one of a couple of dozen different brand names on it. If the brand name of your machine is not listed directly on our main website, check the following listings for your brand:

  • ADMIRAL: Locate Parts under the Maytag name

  • D&M: This company made machines under a lot of different labels, including Admiral, Caloric, Chambers, Frigidaire, Gaffers & Sattler, Gibson, Kelvinator, Kenmore, Magic
    Chef
, Modern Maid, Norge, Philco, Roper, Westinghouse, and a host of others.

  • GIBSON: Frigidaire or D&M.

  • HOTPOINT: GE

  • IN-SINK-ERATOR (ISE): Kitchenaid

  • JENN-AIRE: Maytag

  • KITCHENAID: For many years they had their own distinctive design. A few years ago, Whirlpool bought Kitchenaid, and now these machines resemble Whirlpool vertical machines in pump removal and service.

  • KELVINATOR: Frigidaire or D&M.

  • KENMORE: Some were D&M, some are Whirlpool dishwashing machines.

  • MAGIC CHEF: Some are GE machines, some are Maytag, some are D&M.

  • O'KEEFE & MERRITT: WCI or D&M.
  • TAPPAN: Frigidaire or D&M

  • ROPER: Whirlpool or D&M.

  • WASTE KING: Thermador

  • WHITE-WESTINGHOUSE: Frigidaire or D&M.

The main reason dishwashers exist is that they allow dishes to be washed in water much hotter than you can use when washing dishes by hand. This allows greater grease-cutting and sterilization of the dishes.
